"Close to Normal" Day at Cheshire High School, Despite Threat

Cheshire High School Principal Jeff Solan on Tuesday sent his second message in two days to parents after a scrawled message was found in a boys bathroom on Monday. The message contained a perceived threat that was announced to the student body as the school week began.

Here is the letter Solan sent Tuesday:

Dear CHS Parent,

Thank you for your understanding, support, and patience as we work through the lavatory graffiti situation at Cheshire High School. Our staff and students have responded very well to these unusual circumstances to make today as close to normal as possible. With each passing hour I feel more comfortable that we are returning to normalcy and that our environment is secure. If I did not feel comfortable with students attending school we would have adjusted the schedule accordingly. I believe that it is safe for all students and staff to be at Cheshire High School.

We are continuing to investigate, but have not yet determined who wrote the information on the bathroom wall. I appreciate the cooperation of the Cheshire Police Department who have assured me that they will avail me of whatever resources we find necessary. Given that a police presence makes people feel more secure we will continue to provide that. There will be police at tonight’s Honor Society induction and patrols at other CHS events on an ongoing basis. Finally, I want to thank our staff who have maintained a high level of professionalism and flexibility throughout this event.

Cheshire police have said they plan to have extra police at the school the entire week. In addition, School Resource Officer Lorin Webber works full-time at the school where he has an onsite office.
