Town Council Donates to Cheshire Food Pantry

With a surplus at the end of the fiscal year, the council was able to donate $10,000 to the pantry.

The request for funding assistance was made in February by the , but it wasn't until this week that the Town Council knew it had surplus funds to fulfill the request.

In a unanimous vote, the council agreed to donate $10,000 to the pantry which is run by about 60 volunteers.

The new facility on Railroad Avenue began to serve a growing need in for food assistance when it opened in the fall; over 200 residents now receive weekly food support, according to the organization's records.

Town Manager Michael Milone reported a $771,000 budget surplus for the fiscal year that ended June 30. The council had agreed in the winter that it would support the food pantry if monies were available.

The original request was for $7,500 but the council brought the donation up to an even $10,000.

Pantry records show 100,000 pounds of food is provided to residents annually which has an estimated value of $225,000.

Residents who would like to donate to the food pantry now have an easy way to do so; bins at the are marked for patrons in which food items may be placed.

The most urgent need this summer are portion-sized children's snacks and juices:

  • crackers or cookies
  • Raisins/dried fruit
  • applesauce/pudding cups/fruit cups
  • granola bars
  • juice boxes
