Come enjoy a night of American inspired music with the Cheshire Symphony Orchestra on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 pm at St. Peter's Church in Cheshire. The Cheshire Symphony Orchestra is in its 38th season under the direction of Dr. Hilarie Clark Moore.
The concert program offers works by American composers who depict musically our country’s heritage. Composers Copland, Ungar, and Hayman portray the essence of American life and spirit in the American west in their music. Works by Mancini, Ellington, and Gershwin celebrate America’s rich tradition of jazz, television, and Hollywood. Leroy Anderson’s The Typewriter embraces the clunky office machinery of yesteryear. Marches have a long history in our culture. The Daughters of the American Revolution is dedicated to the DAR, an organization that promotes patriotism and historic preservation. I’m delighted to offer three sections from The Fishergirl. These songs draw from our history as well. A widowed Maine fisherman sings “My Beautiful Lily.” “Our Storybook” touches on the issues of immigration while in “The River’s Journey” a grandmother speaks about finding one’s path in life by recounting her escape from the cruelties during The Civil War. St Peter's Church is located at 59 Main Street in Cheshire. Admission to the concert is $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, children 5 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) welcomes Mike Allen, host and producer of the podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path as their featured speaker on May 13, 2024 at the Wilton Quaker Meetinghouse. Mike Allen will describe the amazing tale of a Brookfield, CT, murder case that in 1981 included the defense “the devil made me do it.” Allen has insights to share since he covered the story as a journalist, and was also featured in the Netflix documentary about the case. 
Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut's Beaten Path is a weekly program of 20-minute vignettes about Connecticut's historic past. It's ranked among the top 5-10% of all podcasts in the United States. Mike's background includes ten years as News Director of radio stations in Brookfield, a stint as Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury, and a 25-year corporate career in communications and marketing. He currently lives in Danbury.
This meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meeting House for the presentation and come to the social hour beforehand. Pizza and refreshments will be served from 6-6:45 PM. We will also be recording and broadcasting this meeting virtually via Zoom for anyone who is unable to join us in person. HFFC meets on the second Monday of each month.

Sherill will outline innovative municipal pilots and what schools and businesses can do to reduce, reuse and recycle the organic portion of our municipal solid waste. She will also offer an overview of state programs as well as steps individuals can take to participate in food waste prevention and food recovery solutions.
All are welcome. There will be time for questions.
The presentation will be followed by light refreshments and the opportunity for continuing conversation on this important issue.

Michael Zanetti, author of the children's book The Sloth and His Friends, will be at Barnes &amp; Noble on Saturday, May 18th&nbsp;from 11:30-3:30 to sign copies. The Sloth and His Friends is a fun, heartwarming story about a sloth that teaches kids about the Amazon rainforest and its rich diversity of life. It's great for kids ages 7-12. Sal the sloth lives a rather dull life in the rainforest canopy. Although Sal has lofty goals, he struggles with his "slothfulness." While his animal friends run, jump or fly around, Sal can barely make it to the top of his tree. Meanwhile, rainforest life is disturbed when a logging company begins clear-cutting trees and burning brush near Sal's home. What will Sal and his friends do? How will they survive? Will nature-loving humans come to their aid? “This book is quirky, funny, and unique and a lot of young people like sloths. Even though it's about a sloth, it's rather fast-paced and exciting,” Zanetti says.

Shubert Theatre

One of the most beloved stories is coming to New Haven when New Haven Ballet presents Beauty and the Beast at the Shubert Theatre on May 25 at 1:00 p.m. The Ballet also performs excerpts from the classical repertory of Paquita.
Angela He and Timothy Fountain lead the cast as Belle and the Beast, with all of the familiar characters, including Cogsorth, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts, adding joy to the winsome and talented cast of dancers from the School.
“Beauty and the Beast touches hearts for a reason,” notes Artistic Director Lisa Kim Sanborn. “With humor, warmth, and a bit of nostalgia, it is easy to understand why this story and these characters have become worldwide favorites. The story is engaging and relevant today on so many levels. The dancers are fantastic, and we are excited for audience members, young and old, to see the production, which features new sets, costumes, and choreography,” Sanborn adds.
New Haven Ballet’s Student Company also presents excerpts from Paquita, with music by Ludwig Minkus and choreography after Marius Petipa, and a special presentation by Shared Ability, New Haven Ballet’s outreach program led by Kerry Kincy that features artists with and without disabilities. 
The Shubert Theatre is located at 247 College Street in the heart of New Haven’s popular downtown restaurant and shopping district. Tickets cost $26-$59 and may be purchased at Shubert.com or the Shubert Box Office at Tel. (203) 562-5666.

New Haven Ballet is a community-based ballet school in New Haven, Connecticut.
