3-Year-Old Cheshire Boy Fights Against Rare Genetic Disorder

Cole Kubicza is fighting against Angelman Syndrome, a rare disorder that makes him have an unusually happy deposition, according to WTNH.

Three-year-old Cheshire boy Cole Kubicza is always smiling. But inside, he struggles.

Cole has Angelman Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that makes a person have an overtly happy and excitable demeanor, according to WTNH and the US National Library of Medicine. However, it also causes delayed development, intellectual disability, seizures and doesn't allow Cole to talk, according to both sources.

"One of the biggest things with Angelman Syndrome is the inability to speak," Cole's father Jim Kubicza told WTNH.

Doctors told the Kubiczas that Cole might not be able to walk, according to WTNH. But at the Cheshire Fitness Zone, Cole has been taking steps, according to the news station.

"For Cole, there's a lot of laxity, a lot of lack of low muscle tone," Cheshire Fitness Zone's Craig Goldstein told WTNH. "We're working on his strength, his coordination, his balance."

Cole still struggles to talk, although communicates with his family with hand and body signals, according to WTNH. The Kubiczas' goal is for Cole to live an independent life, according to the news station.

On Saturday, there will be a walk to raise money and awareness for Angelman Syndrome. For more information, click here.
