Agreement Reached on Connecticut Gun Control

A legislative task force is expected to announce its recommendations today, April 1, on gun control, which could include some of the toughest limits in the nation, according to published reports.

After more than two months of negotiations and coming under criticism for taking so long, a legislative task force is set to unveil its proposals for gun control measures in Connecticut.

The General Assembly's Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children's Safety will announce its findings and recommendations later today, April 1, to the full legislature. Legislative leaders are expected to vote on the measures on Wednesday, the Connecticut Post reports.

The task force was created in January following the murders of 26 women and children by a gunman at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14.

In late February Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, impatient with what he said was slow progress by the task force, released his own proposals on gun control, a broad plan that includes a ban on high-capacity gun magazines and strengthening background checks for Connecticut gun purchases.

Legislative leaders told the Connecticut Post this weekend that the task force's proposals were hammered out during bipartisan negotiations and include a ban on semi-automatic, military-style rifles, along with criminal background checks for gun purchases.

The full package under consideration by the task force is intended to include some of the toughest gun measures passed so far in the country.

"We should have a comprehensive package that will be more encompassing than we've seen anywhere else," Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, R-Fairfield, told the newspaper.
