Four Bear Sightings in Two Weeks

Cheshire residents report two bears; two others in or near Meriden.

Bears have been roaming around the borders of Cheshire since early June, homeowners report, in the northern and western sections of town. What appears to be two individual bears have been seen near Southington and Waterbury.

Cheshire Animal Control Officer April Leiler said a bear was seen Tuesday about 6 p.m. on Nathan Hill Court near Byam Road on the Waterbury border.

Another bear sighting was reported on Birch Drive on the Southington border on June 4.

A bear was also seen on Mohawk Drive in Kensington near Meriden on Thursday evening. Here's what Anna Kipphut had to say about it:

"We were in the house looking out the window when we saw him slowly walk through the yard. We went on the deck and took photos. We have been living here many years and have seen all kinds of birds, reptiles and animals, but this is the first bear."

The fourth sighting was reported in Meriden by the Tommel family.
