Memorial Weekend Parade Steps Off Sunday; Dog Adventures

The long holiday weekend offers the family friendly Memorial Parade on Sunday and plenty of other choices to welcome in the summer season.

Memorial Day doesn’t feel complete without seeing a parade! Cheshire’s parade steps off at Highland School at 1:30 Sunday, May 29, heading down South Main Street to Cheshire High School. The Veterans Council of Cheshire notes this year’s event commemorates the 70th anniversary of America’s entry into WWII. Honor our veterans and enjoy the sense of community! Rain date is June 5.

 Are you and your pup looking for some fun and a challenge? Smartydog Center for Canine Enrichment  (312 East Johnson Ave.) will create a “caninescape adventure obstacle course” at their site this Saturday, May 28, featuring challenges like plank walks, tunnels, wobble board, cargo net and a slide!  Or sign up for Monday’s “holiday escape activity” with your furry friend, featuring classes like canine communication and line dancing. Classes are $12 and open to all well behaved owners and their dogs. Pre-registration is necessary. Check the website for complete details.

Craving some New England-style summer holiday food? Score a lobster dinner with grilled corn and potato salad for just $19 – or enjoy a half-priced raw bar with Rhode Island littlenecks and Wellfleet oysters this weekend! Commune with nature and prepare to get dirty at Boulder Knoll Farm, 720 Boulder Road in Cheshire this Saturday, May 28, from 1-3 p.m. “The Ground Beneath Our Toes!”, the latest in a nature series offered by the community organic farm, will look at soil ecology, compare soil types, and discuss how farmers and nature each build soil in a different way. Free, but please register by email: educator@boulderknollfarm.com

If you’re seeking a peaceful spot to meet a friend and hang out, head to Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford (1339 Whirlwind Hill Rd.) You can enjoy a wine tasting for just $5 and bring home an etched souvenir glass for free! Invite a friend or three, pack some food, and relax by the fireplace or on the patio with a glass of wine in hand and a heavenly view to enjoy. (No outside beverages permitted.) For even more fun, Steve Famiglietti will provide music from 4-7 p.m. this Saturday, May 28. Open 11-6 on Memorial Day too! Check the website for more info.
