Summer Thrift

Read for fun... and some tasty treats courtesy of the Cheshire Public Library's summer reading program, then head to the drive-in for old-fashioned family fun.

“One World, Many Stories” is the theme of this year’s summer reading program at the Cheshire Public Library.  It costs nothing to join, and the program will help keep your child excited about reading this  summer  with incentives like these:

  • Kids who read two books get a free t-shirt!
  • Kids who FINISH the program receive free Rock Cat coupons, raffle prize tickets from Alphabet Garden, Barnes and Noble and Sweet Claude’s Ice Cream Parlor
  • A finale party will be held on Aug. 15 with free food and a great concert beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Of course, your kids will also get the best reward of all: the chance to read all those great books! Click here for more details.

Remember the fun times you had watching movies at the drive-in? You can share those memories with your family this Saturday, June 25, as the Southington Education Foundation hosts a showing of “Karate Kid” at the Southington Drive-In, 935 Meriden-Waterbury Tpke.  Gates will open at 6 p.m.;  the movie begins at sunset. Rain date is Sunday, June 26. The cost is a frugal $13 a carload for non-residents. Walk-ins are charged $2 a person (bring your own chairs). Food vendors will be on site, or bring a picnic!

Staples has a one-time special deal going on this week:  Print out this coupon and bring it into the store (or show the cashier the coupon on your mobile device) and you will be handed a reusable “eco bag” to fill with ink, paper, supplies etc. Then bring your bag of goodies to the register, and receive 15% off everything inside it! Good only through June 25. Restrictions apply: read the fine print. Oh, and you also get to keep the bag. J

Summer is officially here, and that means it’s time for Farmer’s Markets! Hamden’s market will open for the season this Friday, June 24, from 11-3. The newly revamped market at Miller Library’s lower parking lot, 2901 Dixwell Ave., will feature a diverse array of local produce, baked goods, soups, a barbecue vendor and a cookie truck. Hamden Youth Services will also be on hand to entertain younger shoppers with arts and crafts. Markets will continue every Friday through Oct. 7.
