A group of youths from the First Congregational Church on Church Drive spent Saturday afternoon raising money to help families in other countries where sleeping can be a life-threatening activity.

The youths — students from Cheshire High School and Dodd Middle School — were raising money to buy mosquito nets, which are used to shield beds from insects that carry malaria and other diseases. Often the nets are treated with insecticides.

The youth are working with World Vision, which is described on its website as "a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice."

On Saturday, the youth had a table set up on the green in front of the church where they were accepting donations for the nets and were giving away samples of "Plumpy Nut," a mixture of peanut butter and other ingredients that is a staple in many of the countries were hunger is rampant.
