Cheshire Academy to Host Iranian Sculptor Daryoush Golmohannadi

Academy Displays Artwork of Iranian Sculptor Daryoush Golmohannadi
The work of sculptor Daryoush Golmohannadi will be the next exhibit at Cheshire Academy’s Kohn-Joseloff Gallery. Born in Iran, Mr. Golmohammadi is largely self-taught, and has experience in a variety of artistic media, primarily painting and sculpture. His work was displayed at the Tehran Contemporary Art Museum in 1995 and 1998. In subsequent years, because of various restrictions imposed on artists by the Iranian government, he continued making art at home, but had limited opportunity to showcase his work. This year, Mr. Golmohammadi moved to the United States with his family, hoping to find greater opportunity to develop his talent as an artist. He writes, “The idea of daring to work out new ideas has encouraged me throughout the years. During the creation of an artwork, I just let my hands and imagination do what they want to do.” For this exhibit, Mr. Golmohammadi will exhibit clay sculptures that relate to his experience in Iran. In keeping with the Academy’s commitment to creating a global perspective for its students, the gallery strives to feature artists whose work provides a wide range of styles and philosophies. “What gets me excited about showing this work is that there is a specific political comment that relates strongly to what is happening today,” says gallery curator and faculty member Karleen Kubat. “Our students will meet an artist who was not allowed to work in his country because of his political views, and they’ll learn how his family lost their jobs and possessions because they did not follow a particular ideology. What an opportunity for these kids to see how he uses his art as a form of communicating!” The exhibit runs December 1 through January 27. On December 1, there will be a opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with an artist’s talk at 6:30. For more information, please contact Karleen Kubat
