“Silent Hill Sanitarium” - The History of the Cheshire Mental Hospital

Silent Hill Sanitarium was established in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1882 by Dr. Edward Merkle to care for and house the criminally insane.
The history of Cheshire’s only mental hospital eludes most historians to this day. Perhaps it is something better left out of the history books as legend tells that the doctors at Silent Hill Sanitarium performed all sorts of scientific and biological experiments on their resident patients.

Lacking sufficient government and health authority oversight during the turn of the century these experiments resulted in the gruesome demise of many a patient.
Tales of a patient insurrection in 1917 include many a grim and horrific story of the brutal slayings of doctors and nurses within the sanitarium. Silent Hill Sanitarium was closed in 1918 after the murders and virtually erased from Cheshire’s history books. No one knows what happened to the surviving patients.

Admission is $8.00 per person. Hot chocolate, cider and popcorn will be available.
