President Mitt Romney? Think Franklin Pierce

Mitt Romney is uncannily reminiscent of Franklin Pierce; one of our worst presidents.

What do Pierce and Romney have in common?

  • Both Romney and Pierce are New Hampshirites.
  • Both believe in small government, especially when it comes to helping Americans in desperate need.
  • Both have little or no foreign affairs experience. Both are war hawks.
  • Both are easily influenced by powerful supporters.

Helping Those in Desperate Need

In 1853 Pierce vetoed a bill granting public land to the states for the purpose of caring for the indigent who were mentally ill.

His reason? He believed if Congress had the power to provide for the mentally ill who are very poor, then they would also have the power to assist the very poor who are not mentally ill. Eventually, Pierce thought, Congress might even use their power to provide hospital and medical care for the ill or assist people who experienced other human calamities.

Civil Rights

Although Pierce was at first against overturning the Missouri Compromise, in the end he listened to Jefferson Davis, his Secretary of War and signed the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854. Some people believe that Pierce took orders from Davis.

The act allowed the possibility of slavery to spread through all the new states based on the will of the citizens of each state. This led to bloody battles in Kansas most notably by John Brown and his sons who murdered five pro-slavery farmer. The Kansas–Nebraska Act divided the nation and pointed it toward civil war.

Lack of Foreign Affairs Experience

Unfortunately, Pierce’s lack of leadership and his tendency to give in to special interest groups hampered his effectiveness in foreign affairs. He vetoed bills to create a safety net to build the country's infrastructure and believed in a constitution that gave equality to white adult males.

In 1856, Pierce recognized a dictatorship in Nicaragua established by William Walker, an American who had conquered that nation and introduced slavery. Walker hoped to gain Nicaragua's entry into the Union as a slave state. Walker's control soon angered railroad titan Cornelius Vanderbilt, who pressured Pierce to use the U.S. Navy to force Walker to "surrender" the country.

After the Mexican War had ended, there were border disputes that had to be settled. Land that comprised lower Arizona and New Mexico was part of a proposed route for a transcontinental railroad. Pierce was convinced by Secretary of War Davis to negotiate the Gadsden Purchase with Mexico. Gadsden had a financial stake in the purchase; the railroad was never built.

Deja Vu

When it comes to immigrant rights, women’s rights, health care, foreign affairs and new voting laws, Romney appears to be a modern version of Franklin Pierce.

How do historians rate Pierce? Only James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Warren Harding are rated worse than Pierce in a composite of surveys between 1948 and 2011.

President Romney? Think Pierce not Mt. Rushmore.

One of the true hallmarks of a poorly educated person is an attempt to judge hisorical events within the context of a contemporary perspective.
In Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address he listed three acts of federal sovereignty that he had the right to assert over the South. Those were to reprovision forts, collect the customs and duties, and deliver the mail unless repelled. In Lincoln's and Pierce's days that was almost all the federal government did on a local level. National defense, mail and collecting the only federal tax - tariffs on imports and exports. Lincoln did not mention the federal courts, but that was about all he missed in his list. Over the following 150 years the role of the federal government has expanded exponentially, so making comparisons between the politics of the 1850s and the politics of today is as pointless as it is absurd.

Hey George, did you know that at roughly the same time Romney was making his "I'll timed speech" Obama was getting on air force one to fly to Vegas to do some campaigning? Was that I'll timed too? So while Romney was the only candidate acting presidential and standing up for Americans and our right to speak freely, the apologizer in chief was heading to Vegas to get some votes and campaign cash. And now we know that the feds had credible warnings of the attack at least 48 hours prior. Obama might have know that if he had attended any of the security briefings since September 5th, or had an ounce of common sense to beef up security knowing that sept 11 is a prime target date. Amateurish, sims amateurish.

Well said, Bill. You also won't see any reporting on Obama drawing comparison between his campaign staff and the American personnel who died shortly before. And also disregarding the hard work of 40 years of previous presidents to cultivate an alliance with Egypt by not acknowledging them as an ally in a televised interview. These gaffes are much more concerning to me than the timing of a "critique" (warranted as I believe it to be). Look, Romney isn't flawless, but really - if you're gonna go line-by-line with hot pokers be prepared to get poked back. Obama has gotten a nearly-free pass. Also, Romney has been painted by the Dems as some out-of-touch Scrooge (as if the Obamas have struggled with an impoverished life together). If even HALF of the accounts in this article are true http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/09/in_a_kindness_competition_romney_wins_over_obama_by_a_landslide.html , then Romney's character outshines Obama any day. Unless there also are any (true) stories of Obama's CONSISTENT acts of philanthropy out there I'm missing (not just occasional, make-me-look-good instances), I would gladly read them and give O the props. As an Independent, I desire a balanced viewpoint on both parties and it is discouraging I have to excavate to find out for myself. I can't find one major news source that is completely neutral (99%, I must say, lean Left).

Thank you GWB for the mess you got this country into !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This prez could not fix eight years of bad management in three and a half years ..OPEN YOUR EYES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Linda Stannard Wysocki September 21, 2012 at 05:33 pm
for 4 years the Democrats held the majority in both the House and Senate. They had the power to do whatever they wanted, that was how Obamacare got passed, not one single Republican vote. I agree Obama inherited a mess but Obama's promise to cut the federal deficit in half didn't happen. He instead chose to add 6 trillion to it after saying in his campaign that debt occumulated under Bush was "unpatriotic". Obama has the distinction of being the only President to have America's credit rating downgraded not once but twice.
We now have our embassies being attacked and burned all over the globe. Our ambassador to Libya was not only murdered....he was sodomized and what's the Obama's administration's first response.....apology. Eight days after the attack Obama was still clinging to the story that the attacks were caused by the anti-islamic video....this is even after his own press secretary says "it was self evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack". So it turns out that Romney's response was correct and Obama was wrong. Obama was clearly lying when he said Romney tends to shoot first and aim second. He lied to us when he said the Green Party involved in the Iran uprising didn't ask for our help. He lied to us about Fast and Furious (he invoked exexcutive priviledge which means he was involved). He lied to us when he said he wouldn't raise taxes on the middle class. He isn't a commander in chief...he's a liar in chief.

The majority of these states are fact. Anyone care to refute with facts. The attacks were not about a Movie that had been out since June, and in Arabic supposedly since the beginning of August. Also consider this is an "arab spring" country with the speed of twitter communications. So to think some movie is the cause is dishonest.

How funny it is, that people can ridicule the religious beliefs of Christians and Jews in any manner they wish, and one never hears of a Christian or a Jew taking violent action, and the Libtards rally behind the ones that ridicule...
...yet when Islamic Radicals slaughter people, supposedly over a cheap, B-Grade Comedy, these Radicals are touted as the 'Victims', and the Libtards rally NOT behind the victims, or mourn the deaths of innocents, but lay the blame on 'Making fun of another faith', something they do to Christians and Jews all the time. Double Standard?

President Obama is the worse president I remember and I go back four decades. The economy is in the tubes and our future is far from bright.

OMG - you call this "inflammatory rhetoric"? I would guess that your 'reading' doesn't go beyond the Norwich Bulletin, huh?
C. Alexander September 28, 2012 at 09:54 am
Yes Kay... Its the Democrats that tailor their message to the uneducated.... not like the Republicans who tailor their message to the highly educated people like teapartiers... Their signs sayinng intelligent things like: "Govt.- Hands off my medicare!"). You know what else is highly intelligent that Republicans do. Get involved in wars, and then cut taxes at the same time so that our national debt goes up.... then become fiscally concerned when the next President gets elected about the debt they ran up. (That's highly intelligent by the way). I believe it was the Republican Cheney who extolled "Deficits don't matter". If someone wants to look for a worse President than Obama, they don't have to go back 40 years.... only 4.
jane September 28, 2012 at 09:55 am
As Rick Santorum succinctly stated 2 weeks ago: " Smart people will never be on our side"
Apparently he even knows that the Repub base is ignorant.
jane September 28, 2012 at 09:58 am
Considering Wall Street has gone all out to fund the Romney campaign and has left Obama in the dust I would guess that Wall Street does not consider Obama a friend. But, hey - nice comment. snark.
jane September 28, 2012 at 10:00 am
R Ele -" For it and then against it"..........and possibly for it again, before he's against it again. The core of the Romney campiagn.
R Eleveld September 29, 2012 at 02:10 pm
Actually that explains Obamacare and Gay Marriage. For it and then against it, based upon the political winds. Sound familiar. sorry to Obama supporters that would be called evolution. The problem is that a Republican are not allowed evolution.
R Eleveld September 29, 2012 at 02:13 pm
My information is that Obama still had solid support on "Wall Street". Granted that support is more tepid vs the support he had 4 years ago which was OVERWHELMING support from Wall Street. The majority of Wall Street bankers, this maybe be hard to believe, are Dems.

Romney a Hawk?? He's a Chicken Hawk, remember he fled to France during the Viet Nam war to avoid the draft. Obama 2012

Bill September 29, 2012 at 03:54 pm
20 row, wouldn't that make him like Clinton? Besides I though you lefties hated Vietnam so much that so many of themfled to Canada. Figure you would admire someone like that.
The Best Patriot September 29, 2012 at 04:27 pm
Hey Bill: Live in the past much? Next you will be complaining about Martin Van Buren. It's 2012 now, get on board.
And yes Obama will be gone, but it won't be until 2016. Read and weep: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/elections/ 4 more for 44!!!
The Best Patriot September 29, 2012 at 04:35 pm
Bill you sure need to stop living in the past. I didn't know Clinton fled to France to avoid the draft?? And just to let you know ('cause you don't seem to know much) I served in the US Army 1969-1971.And anyone with any sense hated Viet Nam. But from your post it appears you liked Viet Nam right? So I figure you would admire a draft dodging Mittens. You see you repubs have nothing to give so you just go back in the past and make up all kinds of stuff 'cause that's all you have. It's so sad.
Here is another tidbit for you, if you vote in Connecticut your vote is meaningless. Connecticut is an all or nothing electoral State. Connecticut is very strong democratic, so all 7 electrical votes go to OBAMA. So don't waste your time or gas. So you can yack it up all you want here on this post but it won't change a thing.

Romney Gets it Backwards
Mitt Romney claims the Obama administration issued an “apology for American values” after U.S. embassies were attacked. Not true. Romney refers to a statement issued before mobs attacked either in Egypt or Libya, and faults U.S. diplomats for failing to condemn actions that hadn’t yet happened. Furthermore, the word “sorry” or “apologize” doesn’t appear in the statement. Under the headline, “U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement,” the embassy in Cairo said, “Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy.” http://factcheck.org/2012/09/romney-gets-it-backward/

Romney’s Impossible Tax Promise
Experts say he can't cut rates without losing revenue or favoring the wealthy Tax experts — including one who supports Romney’s plan — say the Republican presidential candidate’s promise to cut individual income tax rates without either favoring the wealthy or losing revenue isn’t mathematically possible. That’s the conclusion of the Tax Policy Center in a report the Romney campaign attacked as “biased” (although the campaign previously praised the TPC as “objective,” when it issued a report critical of a rival’s tax plan). http://www.factcheck.org/2012/08/romneys-impossible-tax-promise/

You mean lies like this?
Were there really weapons of mass destruction in Iraq when the U.S. invaded in 2003? A: No. The Iraq Survey Group determined that Iraq had abandoned its quest to develop chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and that it had already destroyed all of its existing stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. http://www.factcheck.org/2008/02/no-wmds-in-iraq/
Think Positive September 29, 2012 at 09:21 pm
Nonsense Linda. Faux News is making you look foolish.
Romney’s claims about the administration “apologizing for American values” fits an ongoing theme of his campaign: accusing Obama of beginning his presidency on an “apology tour” in foreign countries. In fact, that meme informed the title of Romney’s book “No Apology.” We looked into the Obama speeches that Romney cited as evidence and concluded that nowhere did we see that the president “apologized” for America. In some speeches, Obama was drawing a distinction between his policies and those of his predecessor, George W. Bush. In other instances, Obama appeared to be employing a bit of diplomacy, criticizing past actions of both the U.S. and the host nation, and calling for the two sides to move forward. Then, as now, Romney’s claim of Obama “apologies” falls flat http://factcheck.org/2012/09/romney-gets-it-backward/

Where were all the "Deficit Hawks" when Bush was President????
It’s true that Obama “inherited the biggest deficit in our history,” as he said on CBS. CBO’s assumptions did not factor in two recessions (2001, 2008), two wars and a slew of legislative changes from the Bush tax cuts to the Obama stimulus. The difference between the projected surpluses and the actual deficits is $11.9 trillion over that 10-year period. Treasury concluded that Bush policies were to blame for 59 percent and Obama’s policies 12 percent. The rest — 29 percent — were what CBO calls “economic and technical changes,” mostly having to do with changing economic forecasts because of the recessions There is no disputing, of course, that President George W. Bush was president for nearly eight of those 10 fiscal years and holds more responsibility for them than Obama. But Obama bears more responsibility than he is willing to accept, and misrepresents the Treasury analysis to minimize his responsibility. “This whole debate really is missing the point,” Gordon said. “The point is where do we go forward from where we are, and who has a plan to reduce the deficits over the long term.” http://factcheck.org/2012/09/obamas-deficit-dodge/

Okay, a few of you smarter Patchers must realize by now that Avi loves to stir up trouble. And The Patch loves it, because they can then go to their advertisers and say, "Look how many hits we got!" That's why many of us rarely visit Patch or comment any more. Duh... sorry it took me so long to figure it out! Go to real, informative sites. Why waste your time on this drivel?
Jim G. September 29, 2012 at 09:57 pm
What makes you think these other "real, informative sites" work on any other basis?
Just why do you think all those sober news and info sites break their articles up into multiple pieces? Your screen could easily load the whole thing in one. Points for figuring it out... but you missed more points for not seeing the bigger picture. May as well drivel away here. :)
