"Drive Review"

Cheshire Patch welcomes new blogger 15-year-old Benji Saccoccio and his review of the film "Drive" starring Ryan Gosling.

In an ealier review, I said that “Warrior” was the best movie I’ve seen this year.  “Drive” may have just taken that spot.  “Drive”, directed by Nicholas Winding Refn, follows a stunt car driver (Ryan Gosling), who moonlights as a getaway driver.  That’s all I can say for the plot of the film, because I feel saying more would ruin some of the movie.  You just have to go see it to find out more.  Which I highly Recommend you do.
First of all, Ryan Gosling.  Ryan Gosling is just plain awesome.  He brings so much to the unnamed protagonist of “Drive”.  The soft spoken driver often answers in sentences with few words, or no words at all, but you still know exactly what he’s saying.  Especially during the heists, he does not say a single word, and stays completely composed when he’s driving at 100mph.  But sometimes Gosling will make a comment or an action completely unlike him, which you will easily be able to notice.  The little you know about him keeps the character interesting, and you still want to more about him once the movie is over.  Is he a hero?  Is he a sociopath?  I still don’t know.  If you want to see more of Goslings talent, I would recommend the films Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, and Blue Valentine.  All great.
The supporting cast is just as great as Gosling. Albert Brooks is receiving a lot of award buzz for his role, and I agree with that. He plays a merciless crime boss,  when he delivers his monologue near the end of the movie, you will get chills, but just wait until you see what he does with a fork, and also his affinity for knives.  Why is it always someone who’s playing a villain that acts so greatly?  Look at Javier Bardem in “No Country For Old Men”, Christoph Waltz in “Inglorious Basterds”, and especially Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight”.  Albert Brooks can now be added into this pantheon of fine actors.
I’m warning you now, there is a lot of violence and blood, but it is welcome. Usually whenever Albert Brook’s character is involved blood is shed.  Right after violence occured, the film will gracefully shift the tone to a sweet scene between Driver and his neighbor (Carey Mulligan).
If you wanted to see a movie with explosive car chases and gun fights, go see Killer Elite instead.  Drive is more character and plot driven, and is accented by the car chases.  Even during the car chases, it focuses on the characters and their emotions more than whats going on outside of the car.
Now the music. Oh my gosh the music.  All I’m going to say is do yourself a favor, and listen to “A Real Hero” by College feat. The Electric Youth.
Some movies strike a certain chord with me, and Drive was one of those movies. Go see this movie I don’t know if you will like it as much as I did, but there’s no doubt you will. As Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said speaking of Drive, “If you don’t like this movie, I don’t like you.”  Drive may have parked itself into my top five favorite movies.  If you are still uncertain, know this: DRIVE. IS. A MASTERPIECE.
