Claim Denials by Anthem Blue Cross Highest in State

Anthem had twice the amount of reversed appeals than most other insurers.

A “Consumer Report Card on Health Insurance Carriers in Connecticut” released Wednesday shows Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield of North Haven had by far more claim denials reversed than any other high-volume health insurer in the state.

The Connecticut Insurance Department's report helps consumers compare  15 insurers that have the highest volume of managed care coverage.

The report shows Anthem had more than 65 percent of its denials for treatment or services reversed in 2010. The next highest reversal rate was Oxford of Trumbull at 46.7 percent followed by Aetna Health of Hartford at 44.5 percent.

The Connecticut Insurance Department compiled the statistics to help consumers compare health plans offered in the state.

Information included in the 2011 report compares number of providers per county, quality measures, utilization review, claims denials and appeals, customer satisfaction and contact information for all the companies surveyed. There is also a worksheet with criteria to help consumers determine what health plan is most appropriate for their needs.
