Visions for Vacancies: Opportunities to Grow With Kol Ami

About a mile from the downtown area and not far from Interstate 84, there are several buildings with an opportunity for serious growth near Kol Ami. What's the best way to fill it?

Editor's Note: Kol Ami is NOT vacant. The Kol Ami building remains very much in use but is surrounded by several buildings available for lease or purchase.

For a while now, Kol Ami has sat alone as one of the few active buildings in a Highland Avenue Industrial Park. As space around the synagogue goes up for sale or lease, there remains hope that businesses will soon join in making the entire area as vibrant as Kol Ami.

But first, we need your help.

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning - Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

Each week we'll present a new vacant building and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon that puts people most to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

There are several openings at the buildings surrounding Kol Ami, an active synagogue at 1484 Highland Avenue. Whether office space, industry or a variety of other options, we want to know the best way to fill the vacancy.

The park is located not far from the downtown area and is even closer to Interstate 84, so getting traffic should not be an issue. Forget the zoning a minute and put your thinking caps on.

The question now, what to build there. So what's the best use for this property?

Tell Us: What you think would be the best fit for the empty spaces surrounding the Kol Ami synagogue on Highland Avenue?
