Cheshire-based Barker Specialty Company honored with 2013 Family Business Award

Inaugural event, produced by the Hartford Business Journal, recognizes Region’s family-owned Businesses

Hartford, Conn. (October 18, 2013) – Last night, Hartford Business Journal celebrated the outstanding achievements of the region’s most successful family-owned and operated firms, during its first annual Family Business Awards. The publication recognized these successful family-owned businesses during an evening of celebration at The Aria Wedding & Banquet Facility in Prospect, CT.

“The Family Business Awards are a celebration of dedication, commitment and success,” said Gail Lebert, publisher of the Hartford Business Journal. “This year’s awards celebrate the best of the region’s family-owned business community. We are thrilled to recognize them and wish them continued success.”

The 2013 Family Business Awards winners were determined through a judging process. Hartford Business Journal editor, Greg Bordonaro, identified four judges who reviewed all nominations and picked winners in each of the four categories: full-time employees less than 25, full-time employees 25-75, full-time employees 76-199 and full-time employees more than 200. The team of judges was comprised of Laura Grondin, Care of Virginia Industries; Anthony Healis, Woodview Construction Services LLC; Don Opatrny, Lovins Group, LLC and Peter Gioia, Connecticut Business & Industry Association.

The 2013 winners in the full-time employees less than 25 category include:

  • 1st Place: Miller Foods, Inc.
  • 2nd Place: Allied Roofing and Sheet Metal Company, Inc.
  • 3rd Place: American Ladders & Scaffolds, Inc.
  • 4th Place: Sprigs & Twigs, Inc.
The 2013 winners in the 25-75 full-time employees category include:
  • 1st Place: The Music People! Inc.
  • 2nd Place: Traver IDC
  • 3rd Place: Barker Specialty Company
  • 4th Place: McCue Mortgage
The 2013 winners in the 76-199 full-time employees category include:
  • 1st Place: S&S Worldwide, Inc.
  • 2nd Place: Mohawk Northeast, Inc.
  • 3rd Place: Family Care Visiting Nurse and Home Care Agency, LLC
  • 4th Place: Specialty Printing
The 2013 winners in the more than 200 full-time employees category include:
  • 1st Place: Hoffman Auto Group
  • 2nd Place: Ulbrich Stainless Steels and Special Metals, Inc.
Lebert explained that the Hartford Business Journal felt it was important to acknowledge the successes of our region’s family businesses. ”They are an integral part of the social and business fabric of our state and we are honored to celebrate them at this year’s first annual Family Business Awards.”

In addition to celebrating the winners, attendees were able to listen to an inspiring keynote by Alex Taylor, Senior Vice President, Field Operations, Cox Communications, who spoke about how Cox became a family business.
