UPDATE: 189 Cheshire Customers Now Without Power

Update 7:33 p.m.

The latest CL&P figures put Cheshire at 189 customers without power.

That's about 1 percent of the town. Like other areas in the center of the state, Cheshire was spared the brunt of most of Hurricane Sandy's destruction, however at one point there were over 500 customers without power.

CL&P officials said restoration efforts are fully underway in Connecticut although they have declined to give a timetable as to when power may come back on for certain communities.

Also, Patch checked with officials in both the police and fire departments and there has been no official word from town officials discouraging residents from trick-or-treating tonight. So it sounds like Halloween is still on in Cheshire.

According to CL&P, 544 Cheshire customers were still without power as of 1 p.m. A CL&P senior vice president, William Quinlan, said the company is doing damage assessing and couldn’t estimate when full power will be restored, according to Patch.

Meanwhile, Tony Ginnetti of 7 Eastgate Drive lost part of his backyard fence during the storm.

“Everything else is fine,” said Ginnetti. The fence is 14 years old, he added.

“Just couldn’t take the [wind] gusts,” Ginnetti said.

Government response

Town offices and facilities opened at noon.

The emergency shelter at the Parks and Recreation Youth Center closed this morning. According to Town Manager Michael Milone’s office, three people utilized the shelter. It opened at noon on Monday.

There will be no trash collection today.

“Collection for Tuesday will be made on Wednesday, and the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day,” states the Cheshire town website.
