Prof. Goes Bald for St. Baldrick’s Day

It’s easy to see how committed Quinnipiac University Professor Bruce Saulnier of Cheshire is to ridding the world of childhood cancers. Just look at his head.

Saulnier, professor of information systems management was one of 120 students, faculty and staff members who participated in the St. Baldrick’s Day head-shaving event Tuesday at Quinnipiac.

By the time the last head was shaved, $23,492 had already been pledged, shattering the projected $8,000 goal. Participants hope to collect additional donations before the March 15 fundraising deadline.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a major national funder of childhood cancer research grants, second only to the U.S. government.

Saulnier said he often tells his students that it is important to work toward causes that can improve people’s lives around the world. He said supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation helps demonstrate how serious he is.

“The more we can do with that, the better the students are for it because they see us not just talking the talk but walking the walk,” said Saulnier, who raised more than $500. “Anything I can do to support the students I do.”

Kristin Cagney, student co-chair of the event that encouraged participants to be bold and bald, said she appreciates the efforts of Saulnier and the other participants who made the event an overwhelming success.

“It’s a simple way for people to show their support for an incredible cause,” Cagney said.

Twenty-six women also participated in the event, opting for shorter haircuts rather than shaved heads.
