Ice Adds Weight to Storm

The combination of deep snow and heavy ice could bring down decks or damage flat roofs.

Freezing rain and ice will add weight and  structural stress to wooden decks and outdoor stairways that haven't been cleared of the deep snow that fell last week, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

More than an inch of rain and freezing rain could fall between Tuesday morning into the evening. State police say the precipitation could add as much as 60% more weight to some roofs and decks which could cause the structures to collapse.

Some residents in Cheshire took advantage of a dry day on Monday to use a roof rake to clean off the heavy snow. State officials have urged residents to monitor structures which could fail and contact local building officials if problems arise.
