Newspaper Says FBI Staked Out Democrats' 5th District Convention

The surveillance was part of the investigation of campaign contributions that has thrown House Speaker Chris Donovan's congressional campaign into disarray.

A published report said FBI agents staked out the Democrats’ 5th Congressional District convention in Waterbury on May 14 as part of their investigation that has roiled the Democratic Party primary race, resulted in one arrest and cast suspicions on .

According to the Connecticut Post, the agents might have been trying to connect House Speaker Chris Donovan’s campaign officials with others suspected in a scheme to conceal the identities of campaign donors in violation of federal law.

On May 30, FBI agents arrested Donovan’s campaign finance director, Robert Braddock Jr., and since then Donovan has fired his campaign manager, and a supporter, corrections union treasurer Ray Soucy of Naugatuck, and a resident, Paul Rogers, who is an investor in a Waterbury smoke shop, have been identified as suspected co-conspirators.

The Post based its story on unnamed sources, Braddock has denied he is guilty, and Soucy and Rogers have declined to comment.
