Two Cheshire Businesses Close Doors

The businesses, both located in the southern end of town, will no longer be serving the public.

Southern Cheshire has lost two businesses recently with the closing of Arby's and Hometown Wine and Liquors.

The businesses are located on South Main Street almost across the street from each other.

Arbys closed on Saturday, March 30. A sign on the door says the restaurant is closed for good and to check out their other locations in Plantsville, Waterbury and North Haven.

"That's too bad," said Cheshire resident John R. Robinson. "It was something different than the usual fast food. Now I guess we're stuck with McDonalds."

"It seems hard for a business to make it there," said Melissa Dias. "I was afraid that would happen because it was never very crowded."

Before Arby's opened several years ago the site was home to a combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. After it closed, Arby's took over the location.

"The Cheshire Arby’s restaurant closed on March 30. We made the difficult decision to close based on the decline of business in the area," a spokesman for Arby's Restaurant Group, Inc. said in a statement. "We have offered our employees the opportunity to transfer to our nearby Arby's locations.

"We love the community and encourage our loyal customers to visit the neighboring Plantsville Arby’s restaurant located at 867 Meriden Waterbury Turnpike, and the Waterbury Arby’s at 789 Wolcott Street."

Across the street, Hometown Wine and Liquor also is no more. The store opened about two years ago and was in competition with another two other liquor stores in the immediate area.

The store was in the same shopping plaza as Staples and Bagelicious.

"Their shelves were always empty from the start," said Stephen Morris, who was shopping at Staples on Tuesday. "They had a pretty good selection of beer though."
