The people have spoken, and there will be a permanent structure built over the Cheshire Community Pool.

Unofficial early results put the vote at 3,085 in favor of the $3.2 million tension membrane structure and 2,220 against.

In other early results, incumbent Republicans in the first and second districts won reelection. First District Councilman David Schrumm beat Democrat Karen Selleck by a vote of 931 to 832, while Second District Councilman Tom Rucco beat Democrat Matt Bowman 1,099 to 787.

Republican Joseph Falvey, the son of current Third District Councilman Andrew Falvey, failed to retain his father's seat. He lost to Democrat Liz Linehan 874 to 840.

Democrat Peter Talbot easily retained his seat representing the Fourth District by a vote of 1115 -970.

Republican Tim Slocum, the council's president, won the highest total of votes among the At-Large candidates with 4,264.

The polls are closed and now there's nothing left to do but wait. Councilman Peter Talbot reported heavy turnout at Norton School — by 5 p.m., about as many people had voted in that district as did in the last municipal election, he said. There are almost 19,000 people registered to vote in Cheshire and that number is expected to go up at least slightly with the premier of Election Day registration.

With an hour to go, poll workers are reporting brisk traffic through most of the day. At least a dozen voters both registered and voted today, according to the folks in the Registrar's Office.
