Cheshire-Wallingford LWV Honor Women Educators

March is Women's History month. Each year it is celebrated by the Cheshire-Wallingford League of Women Voters who, along with many organizations, participate in and contribute to the National Women’s History Project. 

 The theme in 2012 is “Women’s Education” and the local League members have chosen to honor local women educators in history and social studies.  Teachers in the Wallingford and Cheshire high schools, including Choate and Cheshire Academy, have been invited to participate, and the public is cordially invited to attend.  The event will take place at the Senior Center on Thursday, March 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

             In memory of one of the Cheshire-Wallingford League of Women Voter members, there will be a special remembrance of Elizabeth Giardino, who taught in the Cheshire school system for a number of years.  After her retirement, she made a concerted and successful effort to appeal to the state legislature to restore civics to the high school curriculum,

             The guest speaker for the evening of March 29 will be Wallingford educator and author of Put the Blame on Eve, Dr. Melinda Rising.  Dr. Rising served in higher education for more than 25 years, and for the past five years has served on the leadership team for the American Association of University Women in Connecticut as liaison to the College/University Partnership as well as the Women’s Issues Chair.  The mission of AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
