With Cheshire 'Wreaths Across America' Stop Aborted, VFW Ceremony Rescheduled for Saturday
On Saturday, the VFW will lay a wreath to honor deceased veterans at the plaza in front of Cheshire Town Hall.
On Tuesday, a tractor-trailer was scheduled to pull into the Cheshire High School driveway around 12:30 p.m.
Inside that trailer were dozens and dozens of Christmas wreaths, bound for Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC, with one wreath to be laid at the grave of each soldier who gave his life for his country.
But when the snow began to fall Tuesday morning, those plans for the Wreaths Across America caravan to stop at the high school had to be scrapped when school was cancelled for the day.
The truck is sill DC bound, but without its Cheshire stop. But that's not going to stop the ceremony that had been scheduled to take place from going forward.
The Cheshire VFW Post will perform the wreath-laying ceremony at Cheshire Veterans Plaza this Saturday at noon. The plaza is in front of Cheshire Town Hall.
The VFW has performed this event annually for four years, but when it became known that Wreaths Across America would stop in Cheshire, it agreed to participate with Cheshire High School's BRAVE student group to perform the wreath-laying in front of the high school this year.
Since the event did not occur, the VFW ceremony will take place as has been usual.
Weather has sometimes forced cancellation of public patriotic events in Cheshire before, such as when extremely high winds interfered with a Memorial Day event scheduled for the high school stadium some years ago. The weather forecast for this weekend is for a nor'easter, with up to 18" of snow to hit New England. In that case, the wreath-laying ceremony will be delayed until the weather allows.
The VFW said it wants to honor deceased veterans at this season in the spirit of Wreaths Across America.
