Music in Motion- method behind the madness

THE BIG DAY (part 1)

For football fans its called the Super Bowl and for baseball nuts simply "the Series". On a far less grandiose scale is the annual event in Cheshire called Music In Motion. You've probably seen the somewhat delapidated signs posted on Route Clog, oh I meant Route 10.

Preparations for the event have been going on for months mostly under the leadership of Deborah Aguilar . Last night food was purchased, properly positioned and partially prepared. Tents were erected, tables piled and crews assigned for the big event. Porta-Potties and extra dumpsters poised for action.

At 7AM on this bright 38 degree morning two public works employees hustled beneath bleachers and over the sprawling complex collecting litter left behind after Friday Night Lights (CHS home football game). Why are people such slobs ?

Joann , general whirlwind, and head cook was organizing all food and drink and washing the remnants of chili from two restaurant grade pots.

A Rental Center truck arrived with deep fryers while an electrician and assistants systematically setup "the kitchen".

At 4 o'clock the gates open , by then dozens of volunteers will be in place . Some will be parking lotters. some will be sales, some will be cooks and all will be good will ambassadors and concierges. If you see someone , somwhat manic, with a hat on (required by the state to serve food) they are part of the show behind the show. It is a mammoth project very dependant on weather. This year looks good with clear skies and typical falling (pardon the pun) temps later after sunset.

The Ram Band  performs at 9:00 PM- by then 18 high school marching bands will have performed. Along woth those bands  will come hundreds of band parents and followers from across the state. It will make , melodramatic or not , memories of a lifetime for some.

I've been to M.I.M a few times as a result of curiousity and musical taste changes but this year will be different. Not so much as a blogger , in definition someone not tied by normal journalism rules, but as a parent. A proud parent who has seen the transformation of a boy into a young man and , two months ago, a rather ragtag looking and sounding outfit on the side field, to a regimented band striving for ONE BAND , ONE SOUND.

5 hours and counting
