February Fun on Cheshire School Break

A look at fun family events next week in the region

Cheshire Public Schools will be closed from Feb. 20 - 24 for February break. Since the mild winter has made sledding or ice skating non-starters, here's a look at some other fun, affordable, activities for families:

Cheshire Community Pool:

  • Family Fun Week, Feb. 20- 24, for all ages and swimming abilities. Moms and dads bring your suits to join in the fun. Bring a picnic lunch and stay for the afternoon! This is a great way to get some exercise and spend quality time with the family. Fee: $1.00/person. 12:00 pm-3:00 pm

Cheshire Public Library:

  • Exploring Electricity & Electronics, Monday, 2-3pm or 3:15 - 4:15. Explore the inner workings of electronic toys and gadgets. Construct a variety of battery-powered electronic circuits with and without tools. These workshops are for children ages 6 and up. Registration is required
  • Magic Show with Chick Kelman, Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Bring some magic to your life. All ages welcome, registration is required
  • Family Drum Time with Edward Leonard, Thursday, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. For children 2 and up. Teaches children the basics of music and interactive rhythm games. Registration required.

Dinosuar State Park in Rocky Hill:

"Darwin Days" programs for families during February school vacation week. (The park is closed on Monday). Entrance fee is $6 adults/$2 for 6-12. The programs include:

  • Make a Craft: A craft area will be open daily from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm.  Visitors will be able to make a DNA bracelet to take home.  The DNA bracelet replicates a segment of DNA from different animals using multi-colored beads.
  • Meet the Park's Animals: There will be animal demonstrations daily at 11:00 am and 2:30 pm.
  • Tracks Talks: Will be held daily at 11:30 am.
  • Live Hawk and Owl program on Thursday, February 23rd at 1:00 pm.  Join us to learn more about the living descendants of theropod dinosaurs. Tickets on a first, come basis are included in the $6 entrance fee.

Session Woods Wildlife Managment Area in Burlington:

  • Wildlife Tracks and Signs for Kids on Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Learn about wildlife tracks and take a walk to look for animal signs. Make a wildlife track to take home.  To pre-register, please contact Laura Rogers-Castro at laura.rogers-castro@ct.gov or (860) 675-8130.

Kellog Environmental Center, Derby:

  • Bluebird program and house building on Feb. 25 from 10:30 to 12 p.m.. Learn the status of bluebirds and the ways we can help monitor them and other native cavity nesters. Build your own bluebird nest box! For more information contact Donna Kingston at donna.kingston@ct.gov or (203) 734-2513.
