High Winds Forecast to Hit Cheshire this Afternoon

Winds up to 55 miles an hour expected from slow moving cold front.

Strong and possibly damaging winds could hit Cheshire this afternoon, according to a forecast from NOAA. Winds could gust from 45 to 55 mph beginning around 4 p.m. to midnight today.

Forecasters say the high winds could bring down trees and large branches and cause some power outages. NOAA Storm Prediction Center reports Central Connecticut has a very slight chance of tornadoes forming from this storm. The possibility of severe winds, the prediction states, will increase if the temperatures reach 75 degrees.

Channel 8 reports gusts have hit more than 30 mph along the shore. Meteorologist Gil Simmons notes that power outages could be a concern because leaves are still on the trees.  He said the strongest winds will occur this evening into the pre-dawn hours.
