Cheshire Obituaries: Hazel M. Carney, 96

She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing Tournament Scrabble with her close friend, the late Laura Willhite.



Hazel M. Carney, 96, longtime Cheshire resident passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Elim Park in Cheshire. She was the widow of Stanley E. Carney who predeceased her in 2003.

She was born Dec. 10, 1917 in New Britain, daughter of the late Oscar W. and Julia (Hoffman) Munson. Hazel worked for Napier Company of Meriden prior to her retirement. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing Tournament Scrabble with her close friend the late Laura Willhite. 

She is survived by two sons, Douglas O. Carney and his wife, Nancy and Steven D. Carney, both of Cheshire; two grandsons, Dr. Jeffrey Carney and his wife, Tiffany of Newport News, Va., and Jonathan Carney, of Cheshire; two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Nicole; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Lynn Evenson Carney.

Calling hours for Hazel will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main St. Burial will be held in Cheshire Street Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
