Cheshire Obituaries: Winifred Costello, 80

She was a Eucharistic Minister and taught Religious Education in Cheshire for many years.



Winifred (Melvin) Costello of Cheshire died at her home on Dec. 24, 2013. She was the wife of the late Thomas Costello.

Winifred was born in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland on Oct. 20, 1933.

She is survived by sisters, Ita Morahan in County Roscommon, Ireland and Elizabeth Agatha Gaffney (Jim) of Wallingford and many nieces and nephews in Ireland and locally. She was predeceased by 2 brothers Michael and John Melvin and 2 sisters Katie O’Connell and Sr. Monica Melvin, RSHM.

Winifred worked at AT&T in New York, and after she married and moved to Connecticut, she worked for the former SNET in New Haven until her retirement. She was a Eucharistic Minister and taught Religious Education in Cheshire for many years. She was a member of the Irish American Community Center in East Haven and also the Pioneers of the Sacred Heart.

Her funeral will leave Sisk Brothers Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden, Friday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Bridget Church, Cheshire. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 4 - 7 p.m.
