The End of the Ski Season; Most Resorts Closed

Late season skiing is a pipe dream this year. 

A Facebook post makes it clear, it's a picture is of a guy in a funny hat holding skis and boots with a homemade sign proclaiming 2011-12 winter Armageddon.

"The end of the ski season is near … ski it while you still can," the banner said. Parts of the message were made from the famous Mad River Glen bumper sticker that dares anyone to "Ski it if you can."

The bottom line? Heed the prophet's warning and call ahead to any resort if you are even thinking about getting in some late season runs.

The Glen has been closed for a week now. The northern New England resorts were all trying to get to Easter, but Ragged Mountain closed last Sunday, and Stratton and Okemo are both calling it quits on Sunday.

Luc St. Jacques, the sales and marketing director at Owl's Head in Quebec, said the mountain lost 100cm of snow in four days this week. There is a video of St. Jacques on the resort home page in the trees kicking up Powder on March 2.  Now, 13 trails are left.

Jay Peak in Vermont, across Lake Memphremagog from Owl's Head, suffered a similar meltdown. But 70ºF weather will do that. 

Ironically, the forecast is for 35ºF and snow at Bretton Woods on Monday, but the mountain is already down to just seven trails open. Jay Peak was hinting at a little snowmaking to stretch things out on a Saturday morning Facebook post. Waterville Valley says if you can ski or ride it, it's free until the April 1 closing.

Just call ahead if you are even thinking about gong anywhere.
