Why Don't Contractors Call Us Back?

It seems a return call is an unlikely courtesy these days.

I’ve had less than an acceptable response from a handful of plumbers, glass and mirror installers, tile layers and appliance repair people. I understand with some sought-after specialists a wait is expected, but no courtesy return call only adds frustration and leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

When contacting a contractor, I’ll leave a voicemail and follow up with an email (if available). I’ll wait a few days and call again. If no contact is made, I go to the next one on the list. When I finally get someone to the house, its often two to three weeks after the quest begins. I can’t help but feel like one of those desperate high school girls that followed beautiful male specimens around campus. I’m not going to beg for service, but it often feels that way.

All I want is a competitive quote along with a scheduled date for the project.  It’s getting to the point where I’m surprised, even shocked, when I DO get a call back. Then, when I’m finally speaking with a human, there’s often attitude — as if  I’ve inconvenienced  them! I had a tile man give me a quote for a bathroom floor. When I called him back, he was booked through October. October? Maybe my job wasn’t big enough, not worth his time. Maybe the world is dangerously low on plumbers, tilers, handymen? In this economy, it’s hard to believe anyone would turn down work.

I’m over the game. I’m tired of asking, walking on eggshells when trying to hire someone. Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions, but it seems no one wants the work. Am I alone on this? The recommended contractors who poop gold, or at least believe they do, swagger with confidence. I’ve tried name dropping, telling them who recommended them, what wonderful things I’ve heard. The charm has officially fizzled and no longer works.

I asked a few friends if they’ve experienced the same hindrance. I have a friend who was looking to do an addition to her kitchen. A recommended contractor came to her house, spending a lengthy amount of time taking measurements.  He was never to be heard from again, vanished into thin air. She made a few attempts with phone calls, but no response.

Then there’s the friend who contracted to have a paver patio installed. On the day the man was to start, he called to say he decided it was a nice day and was headed to the Cape! He was promptly fired.

If I find a trusted contractor, I will nourish the professional relationship. I’m friendly, offer beverages, sometimes lunch. Most appreciate the gesture, others are a bit cautious. But once they realize the intentions are genuine, that I pay invoices on time and continue to call for more work, they stick around.  f the work is good, response time speedy and rate is competitive, I’ll be loyal and spread the good word.

Just had this experience with Ali's Nursery. I had to call about four times before someone even called me back. Guy showed up for day of appointment but never received the quote. Called yet again. We had our koi pond installed by someone that actually returned calls.

I'm the owner of a duplex of which I own and occupy. I've been spending the past 2 years doing everything from bathrooms, kitchens, hvac, yard work. I am in the "computer industry" which in the '90s I was lead to beleive would yeild promise and reward. Though I do very well, I sometimes wish I could swing a hammer. I can not even comprehend the difficulty in trying to find a professional contractor who is reliable. In my business, the client ALWAYS comes first and every reasonable attempt to secure the business and maintain a healthy client relationship is made. I feel like I would make millions if I could only build an addition on a house.
The good side effect of being left to ones devices is I have learned how to do so much that I need a contractor for very little these days. Unfortunately that is not the situation for many. I do know of two very responsive and reliable contractors if anyone needs a reference. Be well everyone and good luck. Eric

I even have a showroom, for you to come talk to me...personally.

Have you tried looking online for a local contractor with a showroom? most real contractors do not advertise in the publications that you find in your mailbox, or in spam folders. They have small showrooms...The magazines, and paper publications, service magic, and the other lead generators are not contractors. They are just salesmen. And they are expensive...

I wanted to shine a ligt on the contractors end of the phone call. As a contractor myself, I try hard to return calls and make an appointment within a weeks time of first contact, then get out an estimate in a timely manner. If I am not the right person for the job, I will tell the customer to try a different guy. I am not always able to be the perfect contractor. I know there are times when I have a lot of work lined up, family obligations and time given to organizations I am a member of. Many days I do not take the time to make calls because I know that time is needed for the job at hand. When your hands are busy working on one job, finding time to spend on "paperwork" may not happen until late at night , or, not at all.
Another thing to note is that many contractors are "free spirits". Business / sales qualities may not be as strong as their talents in their field. I am not going to apologize for them, just wanted to give a little insight.

I had the same problem with them. However, I only call once; you don't want my business, you're the loser; you don't want too many peoples' business, you're out of business.

Unfortunately for Ms. Beiter, I think it's going to be a cold day in hell before any contractor responds to her requests going forward after this article.

I would recommend using a service like Contractor Connection:
http://www.contractor-connect.net I used them to help me find a contractor to remodel my kitchen. They sent me profiles for some of the top contractors in my neighborhood and even collected the estimates. I saved a bunch of time and had a great experience. Cheers!
