It's a sting of sorts; an underage person enters a store and tries to buy cigarettes. The underage customer is an employee of the state Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program which conducts compliance inspections.
All 24 of the stores investigated Tuesday in Cheshire refused to sell tobacco to the undercover customer who was under 18 years old.
The businesses "rightfully refused to sell tobacco products to underage minors," the Cheshire Police Department said in a statement. The police in partneship with Cheshire Department of Youth and Social Services also did targeted patrols in the last two weeks to deter minors from smoking.
