Elim Park Gives Back to Cheshire Emergency Services

The retirement community recently gave some hefty checks to the Cheshire Police Department and the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department.

With almost 500 people living on their campus, Elim Park Continuing Care Retirement Community has its share of police and fire calls — many false alarms, but some bonafide emergencies.

To thank the Cheshire Police Department and the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, Elim recently presented checks for $165,000 to each of the departments, said Ron Dischinger, Elim's president and CEO.

And it's something they do every year, he said.

"Elim has made of checks for a number of years, in part because of the service we receive from the volunteer fire department and the police department in town," he said. "We have close to 500 residents on campus here and safety is always a concern for us.

"We are very supportive of our local fire and police departments," he said, "and not only that, we are very dependent on them so we support them each year."

Both departments are expected to use the funds on supplies that would not normally be covered in their budgets.

The fire department responds to all false alarms and real emergencies at the campus, Dischinger said, "and unfortunately the false alarms happen too frequently."

The Fire Department responds not only to fire calls but medical calls as well, he said, so they're at the campus often.

"They will respond the same time as the ambulance," Dischinger said. "Unfortunately when you hear sirens down Route 10 in southern Cheshire, quite often they're coming to Elim Park.

"But we're always glad to hear them coming," he said. "They're a great volunteer fire department and a terrific police department and they are very supportive of Elim Park and very courteous to the staff and are always welcome through the doors of Elim Park anytime."
