Police ID Pedestrian Struck and Killed by a Jeep in Durham

Police confirm that Wanda Jacques-Gill, 61, was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by 39-year-old William Zanks. The incident happened on Route 79.

State police have identified the woman who was struck and killed by a Jeep Wednesday night on Route 79 in Durham as Wanda Jacques-Gill.

According to a police report issued Thursday, Jacques-Gill, 61, of Durham, was in the roadway on Madison Road, near the intersection with Sand Hill Road, when she was struck just before 6 p.m.

Police said Jacques-Gill was getting her mail at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Jeep, William Zanks, 39, also a Durham resident, was not injured, police said.

Jacques-Gill was rushed to Middlesex Hospital where she was pronounced dead. State police said her family has been notified.

According to online reports, Jacques-Gill was reportedly a part of the Durham Animal Response Team (DART) in 2011.

No charges have been filed in the case. The incident remains under investigation.

They interviewed her husband on Channel 30 tonight. Very emotional. Very sad situation for all concerned, including the driver, whose life will never be the same. Just a thought: I think it is a bad idea that resident mai boxes on a dark and dangerous road such as this are often on the oppostie side of the street. Resident safety should trump post office convenience.

They also need to put up some street lights that road is very dark at night and it makes it hard for people to see also need to do more about speed limit could save alot of peoples lives
