[UPDATE] Suicide at Cheshire Correctional Institution

Inmate who apparently committed suicide has been identified.

The state Department of Corrections has identified the inmate who apparently committed suicide on Monday.

He is identified as Philip Richardson, 55, of Middletown. The DOC reports that Richardson was seen in his cell with a piece of a bed sheet tied around his neck. The sheet was tied to the window bars in the cell, according to the report.

Richards was alone in his cell when he was discovered. Corrections and medical staff worked on the man and then transported him to Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington, where he was pronounced dead at 11:40 a.m.

He was serving an 18-year sentence for first-degree manslaughter. Richardson had been incarcerated since 2005.

The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death.

I guess at his age with his sentence life can seem pretty hopeless.

Uconn correctional managed health care does not provide enough mental health counselors. Some work short staffed and less than 40 hours. Weekends have little coverage. With the Sandyhook shooting Ucmc should be ashamed they feel bad about the event when they do not provide for enough mental health coverage in jails and prisons.
