Collapsed Pool Bubble Cut Down (Video)

The huge fabric bubble was removed Monday morning from the pool building.

It took little more than wrenches and box cutters to detach the collapsed bubble from the Cheshire Community Pool building Monday morning in Bartlem Park.

A crew of a dozen workers led by Mike Roach, owner of Hemisphere Structures of Chestnut Ridge, New York,  worked on top of the "great wall" that connected the huge fabric bubble to the pool building.

"We'll disconnect the bolts that anchor the bubble and gradually open up the fabric," Roach said. The condition of the equipment from the pool interior will be inspected, he said. "We'll remove anything that's not broken and salvage as much as we can," Roach added.

Town Manager Michael Milone announced earlier this month that the bubble cannot be repaired. Instead, the fabric will be hauled away. "We'll cut it into small pieces and containerize it,"  Roach said.

The Town Council, which is in the midst of its budget review, must decide in the next few weeks whether to approve the cost of  a new bubble or turn the pool into a summer-only facility.

Budget workshops continue at Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. A public hearing on the budget will be held April 5.

Once the fabric was loosened, workers cut it away from the building, allowing it to fall onto the pool deck below.
