Connecticut's Hispanic Population Climbs Above 500,000

New London County saw the biggest increase in the Latino population between 2010 and 2012.

The state’s Hispanic population has climbed above 500,000 and is growing at a rate 12 times faster than the general population.

According to census data from 2012, Connecticut’s Hispanic population for the first time hit the half million mark, with 510,645 Latinos living in the state, according to new figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hartford Courant reports.

One of the biggest population regions for Hispanics is in New London County, where the population climbed 8 percent between 2010 and 2012.

"I think this is something to be welcomed and not something to be feared," the Courant quotes New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio.

In 2011 there were 496,644 Latinos living in Connecticut, the Courant reports, citing the U.S. Census Bureau data.
