Dog Food Recalled For Salmonella

About 70 stores in the state sell the Diamond Pet Foods brand linked to the illness.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with public health departments in Connecticut and eight other states where 14 people have become ill from Salmonella.

The multistate outbreak is associated with recalled dog food made by Diamond Pet Foods in South Carolina.

The state Department of Agriculture said there are about 70 stores in Connecticut where various brands of Diamond Pet Food products are sold. Health inspectors are checking the stores to make sure the recalled dog food is removed from the shelves, the department said in a statement.

Pet owners should check for recalled dog food products and discard them the agricultural department said. Here is the list of brands included in the recall:

"People and dogs are getting pretty sick," said Tracy Cavaciut of Granby, who breeds French bulldogs and has six dogs of her own. "It's scary that I just found out yesterday, and I'm a dog breeder."

Cavaciuti said she had a friend in New Hampshire with three sick dogs who was told to throw out the dogs' food dishes without touching them. She said she hoped that the dog food company would determine soon whether the contamination came from the dog food plant or from a meat supplier to that plant.

According to the company’s website, “Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled some brands of dry dog and cat food that it manufactured in its Gaston, S.C., facility between Dec. 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012, due to potential Salmonella contamination.
