Debate Planned for Murphy, McMahon

With the Democratic win sewn up, Murphy wasted no time in calling out his opponent.

Republican U.S. Senate nominee Linda McMahon on Wednesday was asked by her Democratic opponnent, Chris Murphy, to hold a debate next week. The invitation from Murphys and the response from McMahon, however, were perhaps more rhetoric than a substantial scheduling of a debate.

This election cycle promises to be a contentious one in the race for Connecticut's open senate seat.

According to the Connecticut Mirror, shortly after accepting the win in the primary on Tuesday night Murphy launched into a critique of McMahon, suggesting that as a multi-millionaire businesswoman she is out of touch with most of her would-be constituents.

"I've spent the last 10 years fighting for that out-of-work dad who's got to get back to work, for that hungry kid who just wants three meals a day, for that homeless veteran who wants a roof over his head," the Mirror quoted Murphy from his victory speech.

This is McMahon's second bid to win a seat in the Senate. She lost to Democrat Richard Blumenthal two years after a long, expensive and contentious campaign. The 2012 race with Murphy also promises to be highly charged and expensive.

Murphy, who was the endorsed Democratic Senate candidate, easily fended off a challenge from Susan Bysciewicz, the former secretary of the state, in Tuesday's primary. McMahon, the Republican-endorsed candidate for the Senate race, handily defeated a challenge by former 4th District Congressman Chris Shays.
