Former state Democratic Rep. John "Corky" Mazurek of Wolcott announced this week that he will challenge Republican Sen. Joe Markley of Plantsville for the 16th District seat which covers a portion of Cheshire, Southington, Waterbury and all of Wolcott.
The Meriden Record-Journal reports that Mazurek said he's entering the race and will seek to qualify for funding from the Citizen's Election Fund.
Markley returned to state politics after a 24-year absence after losing his seat in the late 80s. He regained office in 2010.
