Heavy tree damage in Connecticut

Winds along the Connecticut coast were gusting to 51 mph in New London this morning at 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Maximum sustained winds near New York City are 65 mph.

Very heavy rainfall across most of the state is reported by the NWS with rainfall totals in western Connecticut more than 8 inches in many locations.

Irene is forecast to move through extreme western Connecticut by noon as a strong tropical storm. Once the storm moves out of the state, the NWS reports a second period of wind is expected this afternoon from a different weather system with gusts to 60 m.p.h.
