Single Stream Recycling Arrives in Cheshire!

Touting the toters; the new program will provide residents with wheeled recycling containers.

The following is a news release from the Town of Cheshire:

Residents in Cheshire will soon have the convenience of a much larger covered container for all recyclable materials; no more cutting, smashing, separating, bundling or bagging.

The added convenience of wheels will make it easy to roll these containers out to the curb, where a truck with an automated “boom” arm will neatly collect the contents.  And since the recycling collection will be biweekly, residents will only have to wheel their containers out every other week.

Regular solid waste collection will continue on a weekly basis. The special rear-yard collection service for eligible senior and disabled residents will continue as well, on a weekly basis for solid waste and on a biweekly basis for recyclables.

This program is expected to significantly increase recycling, resulting in the disposal of less solid waste, saving both money for taxpayers and helping the environment.

The new recycling containers will be delivered to all Cheshire households, including condominiums that currently have individual town-supplied solid waste pickup.  Most households will receive the 96 gallon recycling containers, and a limited number of 64 gallon recycling containers will be available; the distribution policy is currently being developed by the Town Council.

This program is scheduled to begin in late November.  Information on the delivery of the recycling containers, the collection schedule, and an updated listing of accepted materials will be available soon on the Town’s website at www.cheshirect.org. In addition, information explaining the program in detail will be mailed to residents.

The Town Council is holding a Public Information Session at their regular meeting on September 11 to further acquaint residents with the details of this program and its implementation.

There will also be a booth at the Fall Festival on September 8, 2012 with samples of the recycling containers and information on the new automated recycling program.  In addition, the recycling containers for this new program will be on display at several town facilities, and their locations will made available as soon as the dates are scheduled.
