State Workers Retire by the Thousands

State budget chief announces open positions won't be filled to allow size of government to shrink.

More than 2,600 workers retired from state jobs in the fiscal year that ended on Oct. 1.  The amount is nearly three times the amount in 2010 when 957 state workers called it quits.

Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management Ben Barnes said the state has no intention of refilling the open positions. "These retirements have given us additional flexibility in our workforce, as we seek to streamline and flatten management and shrink the size of state government in Connecticut," he said.

Information from the OPM show the highest number of retirements came from the Department of Corrections followed by the Department of Transportation.
