Town: Cheshire Correctional Institute Owes Us $1.6 Million

The Town of Cheshire has filed a lien on the Cheshire Correctional Institution, saying it owes $1.6 million in back sewer fees.

The Town of Cheshire believes Cheshire Correctional Institution owes it $1.6 million.

Recently, the town placed a $1.6 million lien on the state-run prison, saying it owes $1.6 million in back sewer costs, according to The Record Journal. The town alleges that over the past nine years, the prison is responsible for much more wastewater than its contract with the town allows, according to The Journal.

“We’d like to get the back billing resolved,” Town Manager Michael Milone told The Record Journal. “We would hope the state would honor its obligations. It’s due and payable and we’d like someone to move it along.”

Per contract, the prison pays the town for 350,000 gallons of daily wastewater used, or about 10 percent of what the town processes, according to The Record Journal. However, the town alleges that the prison has far exceeded that quota, as it has been responsible for 20 to 25 percent of all the wastewater the town processes, according to The Journal.

The state refused comment to The Record Journal, saying it was ongoing litigation.
