Cheshire Academy Volleyball Loses to Suffield 3-0

The Cheshire Academy Fighting Cats hung tough in a tight match against Suffield.

On Saturday, October 20, the Cheshire Academy volleyball team lost to Suffield Academy 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 28-26) at Suffield Academy.

The CA Fighting Cats hung tough, but could not overcome Suffield’s height advantage and strong middle hitters. The first game started slowly, with the teams trading several serving errors.

Suffield inched ahead to 19-12, but CA answered with a run behind the serving of senior Lili Mitchell, to pull to nearly even at 19-17. But Suffield ran off the next four points, and even two aces by CA’s Kayla Padroff were not enough to stave off defeat.

In Game Two, Suffield got their hitting game going and used their height advantage to dominate the net as they surged to a 14-4 lead.

They were still up by 10 at 20-10, when CA staged a run, anchored by the strong serving of senior co-captain Dana Garcia to get back into the game. But it was too little, too late, and Suffield closed out a 25-17 win.

Game Three was the most thrilling of the match. Cheshire changed their defense to nullify Suffield’s advantage, and took an early 10-6 lead. Two consecutive Padroff put them ahead 15-10, the largest lead that either team had all game.

Suffield fought back, tying the game at 15. From there, the game went through eight ties, with neither team able to pull ahead by more than one. CA had a chance to put the game away at 24-23, and 26-25, but could not close it out.

Suffield served for the match at 25-24, but Cheshire held them off. Finally, Suffield triumphed at 28-26.

Kayla Padroff was the star for Cheshire, hitting on 15 of 16 serves and pounding out 5 aces. She was also the star on defense, with 10 digs on Suffield’s big middle hitters. Co-Captains Emma Gailey and Dana Garcia were a combined 22 for 22 serving, with an ace. Senior Lili Mitchell played very well filling in for an injured Phoebe Van.
