Cheshire Educator Named Professor of the Year

Gary Rose chosen as top educator by Carnegie Foundation.

Gary Rose of Cheshire has been named 2011 Connecticut Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for his work as a political science educator at Sacred Heart University. 

Rose joined the Sacred Heart faculty in 1982 and is now the chairman of the school's Department of Government and Politics. His latest book, Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics and the Maverick Tradition, looks at political trends in New England.

Rose said he is passionate about introducing students to the political system. “My inspiration comes from a firm belief that students can, if they so desire, make a profound difference in American politics. I believe in the old axiom that ‘knowledge is power.' He contnued, “I'm very proud of the large number of graduates from our political science program who have, in one form or another, entered public service and are working for the common good."

Rose was one of 27 state winners in 2011 chosen from a field of 300 candidates. He was selected from faculty members nominated by colleges and universities throughout the country.
