Cheshire Girls Volleyball Team Remains Undefeated [VIDEO]
Seven matches, seven sweeps; Rams football falls to No. 1 Xavier; boys soccer, girls field hockey teams each win two.
The Rams girls volleyball team continued to roll, improving to 7-0 this week while again not losing a single game in either of their matches. They have seven 3-0 sweeps in seven outings.
Cheshire High School won its Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic meeting with Amity-Woodbridge handily by game scores of 25-18, 21-16, 25-20 at home Friday.
Gina Buzzelli made 23 assists and seven service aces, Kelly Gunneson had 10 kills and eight blocks and Kerry Cavoya 11 digs.

Cheshire met previously undefeated Sheehan-Wallingford Monday in Wallingford it the Rams' first sweep of the week. Cheshire won by game scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-14 in the Housatonic Division match.
Gunneson led the way with 17 kills and nine blocks, McKenzie Abelli had nine kills, Buzzelli 33 assists and three kills and Chavoya seven digs.

Football
The Rams (2-1) went up against the No. 1 team in the state, Xavier, Friday at Palmer Field in Middletown, and the Falcons proved a bit too much winning 42-20 in the SCC interdivision matchup.
Xavier used a powerful ground game that gained 387 yards, led by running back Mike Mastrioanni (189 yards, 30 carries, three touchdowns).
Cheshire senior quarterback Michael Ecke threw for 116 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Dietrich in the second quarter. Ecke also ran for 89 yards on 15 carries and scored twice from 14 and 5 yards, both in the second half.
Cheshire plays Daniel Hand-Madison (3-0) on Thursday at Falcon Field in Meriden at 7 p.m.
Girls Swimming
Cheshire defeated host Hamden 102-73 Monday to improve its season record to 5-0 and extend its national dual-meet record to 281.
Cheshire's Denise Costello was a double-winner in the distance events, the 200- (2:06.59) and 500-yard (5:38.38) freestyles, Laura Mongillo took the 200 individual medley (2:24.46), Sara Barlok, the 50 freestyle (26.64), Delaney Molnar, 100 butterfly (1:07.17) and Jessica Liu, 100 freestyle (57.39).
The Rams also won the 200 medley relay (1:59.49) with a team of Barlok, Lindsay Smalec, Maggie Ptszyanski and Haley Payne, and the 200 freestyle relay (1:12.09) with Jenna Cannata, Barlok, Alexandria Koukos and Liu.
On Saturday, the girls won the Westherfield Invitational, scoring 753.5 point to the host school's 581.
Cross Country
The Cheshire girls team won both ends of a tri-meet Tuesday in Wallingford, defeating Sheehan 15-50 and Hamden 19-44. Kathleen Kalbian was the overall individual winner with a time of 20 minutes, 34.2 seconds. Other Rams finishers: Amanda Chang, third, 21:43; Nicole Adam, fourth, 22:11; and Tori Wickenheisser, fifth, 23:03.
The boys team won two and lost one at its quad meet in Wallingford Tuesday, taking victories over Sheehan 22-49 and Hamden 20-43 and losing to Fairfield Prep 18-39.
Field Hockey
The Rams (5-1) went 2-0 for the week, ending with a 3-1 victory over Hamden at home Friday. Miranda Garcia scored twice and had one assist and Emma Farrel scored once and made two assists. Goalie Maria Blois made eight saves.
Cheshire routed Sheehan 9-0 Tuesday in Wallingford behind a hat trick by Farrel, who also assisted on one goal. Anna Marcucilli had two assists, and Alexis Sansone a goal and an assist.
Boys Soccer
Cheshire (4-1-2) ended the week in style with a 4-0 victory over Lyman Hall at home Friday. Michael Ranando, Labi Shaqiri, Matt Mueller and Devin Lerner each scored and Nick Berardi had three assists.
The Rams got back on the winning track, after two ties last week, with a 3-0 victory over Sheehan in Wallingford Tuesday. Arman Karbassioon, Berardi and Sam Donohue each scored. Goalie Nick Velleca made three saves in the Housatonic Division match.
Girls Soccer
Cheshire (6-1) bounced back from its first loss of the year earlier in the week with a 2-0 victory over Wilbur Cross 2-0 Friday in New Haven. Alexandria Pelletier and Kathleen Castrilli provided the goals.
The loss came to Amity 1-0 on Tuesday at home. Goalie Natalie Reynolds made 14 saves.
