Cheshire Public Schools Closed Monday; First Day of School Cancelled

Students and parents have a bit more time to finish their back-to-school list with the announcement that the first day of school cancelled.

Superintendent of Schools Greg Florio announced Cheshire Public Schools will not open Monday due to the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Irene.

The first day of school was scheduled to begin on Aug. 29 but Florio said Friday if the storm did not weaken, he would make an announcement about the school schedule by mid-day Saturday.

Florio and about 30 other town officials met at Cheshire Fire Department Headquarters on Friday to discuss emergency preparations and response.

Following that meeting, Florio told Cheshire Patch he wanted to give residents as much notice as possible if the decision was made to close schools.

Cheshire school parents report they received a recorded phone message from the school district informing them the first day of school has been changed to Tues., Aug. 30.

The missed day on Monday will count as a snow day, Florio has said.
