[UPDATE] First Day of School Goes Smoothly in Cheshire

As the first day of school ended, Florio said it went smoothly for the most part. "There were a few missed bus stops and delays. One bus broke down and caused some problems," he said.

The Cheshire school enrollment shows a small drop for the 2012-13 school year, according to Central office staff. Enrollment on the first day was about 4,600 students, or 2.4 percent fewer than last year.

Florio said there were no sudden peaks of new students this year at any of the schools. Last year at Chapman Elementary School, more than 20 students registered in August just before school began. "There are no issues on that magnitude. There will be the same class sizes," as planned, he said.

This year's enrollment figures for each school will be reported at the Cheshire School Board meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Cheshire Town Hall.
