Schools Open on Veterans Day Shows Lack of Gratitude, Reader Says

A Cheshire resident shares how disappointed he is that the town's students had school on Veterans Day.

Sean Crose is disappointed that Cheshire students had to attend school on Veterans Day.

"Saving our thanks for Thanksgiving is not only unnecessary, it's just plain wrong," he wrote in his blog on Cheshire Patch. "Having our children attend school on a day dedicated to those who have served us smacks of ingratitude. Cheshire is better than this."

Crose said he loves living in Cheshire and that love is why it pained him so much to learn of schools remaining open on Nov. 11.

Reader Kim McKnight said she agrees with Crose. She posted the following on Cheshire Patch's Facebook page:

"I have to say, I agree. It just didn't feel right sending my children to school today. They have had other days off but not one for the men and women for fight or have fought for our country. Just not right."

Reader Lisa Kosarko Sotero gave an alternate point of view via Facebook:

"My daughters school paid tribute to veterans today. They had a special breakfast with veterans and then the children got to ask questions and learn about what it means to serve our country. My daughter's class presented the veterans with poppies. She really looked forward to today's ceremonies and when she came home she went on and on about all she learned! Can I honestly say she would've gotten as much from staying home?

Can we be certain that all parents would have spent the day truly honoring veterans half as well as they did in my daughters school? From what I understand, it was the school system's hope that the children would get more from a day at school celebrating veterans than if they stayed at home. Also, why couldn't students, who had family members that are veterans, take the day off? Days are taken off for reasons far less important. Just another point of view."
